Around the World

When it comes to world travel, I've only really occupied three major islands. Nevertheless, today I've deemed it necessary to document my various globe trottings. I've plotted here the places on Earth that I've been in terms of how many times I've been there and how long I was there for. Enjoy!

In a way, you'd think I would have visited a larger area of my own country during my twenty-one years on Earth, let alone the world. Apparently not.

  1. See, I strongly feel that this chart could be improved:

    • The transparency of the circles makes reading of the chart in some areas difficult.

    • The size of the circle is unhelpful, as large circles obscure surrounding data. (I acknowledge this could in some ways be seen as a positive.)

    • The gradient appears to be both varying in hue and brightness. Dish ish nosh asheptable!

•The nights stayed would be more easily interpretable if the scale was in discrete colour steps, IMHO.

    • Perhaps a log scale would make better sense for nights stayed.

    • As there is no scale on the chart, there is no reason why bali should still be so small. The consistent use of the legend makes sense here. Big tick for that.

    Other thoughts:

    • Probably a good thing you haven't been to WA, for their sake.

    • Could this work with contour lines?

    • You will need to please tell me what port douglas/cairns is like as I will be going there in late july.

  2. Ah, thankyou for your comment. All of these things you've mentioned I had considered before I made the graph. As I am a designer, these things cannot go unnoticed, and are all done for a reason that balances appearance with the even more important functionality of the graph. So I'll explain them all (if that doesn;t take too long)

1 - Slight transparency is designed so you can see some of the hidden circles that might not otherwise be seen.

2 - Large circles are designed to show the "unexact" nature of the map, since it is not perfect. They are there to mainly show the "essence" of where I have been, and how long I've been there (which is also why there are few number indicators on the scale).

3 - The gradient is awesome. Hue and brightness. When you can do both, it's awesome.

4 - There are discrete steps (for when I made it), but for the sake of reading the map, I made it a gradient to represent only the essence of how long I've been in places rather than exact figures (as I said before)

    5 - It is a log scale. 1 - 10 - 100 are all equally spaced.

6 - I didn't make Bali bigger because it was not meant to be a main part of the map. It is rather insignificant compared to my Australian journeys.

Anyway, I have rambled on for too long in the comments box now. I love that you commented on all those things, since it means you noticed them. Yesssss. Awesome. There are probably things that could be improved on this map. True. But not today. Maybe.
