Word of the Rings

Perhaps it is worthwhile noting that I have not included most verbs, adjectives, pronouns and the like in this graph of words used throughout the entire Lord of the Rings film trilogy script. Otherwise, these are the most commonly spoken words by characters in the Lord of the Rings. I hope it is obvious that the bigger the word is, the more often it is spoken throughout the movies. If this is not so, then complain in a comment on this post and I will try to feel sorry for you.

  1. Awesome, I've been playing around with things similar to this for my vis com project lately so i was pretty surprised when i saw this. Freaking awesome idea. Probably one of my favourites thus far. had you considered placing the words in the shape of a ring or other object...or was a word cloud the best alternative?

  2. Another thing that i noticed was that a few words are so small that they become illegible, perhaps increasing the size of the whole graph could make it easier to read some of these words...unless your intention was to show that these words have very little significance but still spoken often enough to deserve a mention...or maybe just to fill in gaps to 'fill up' the image...

  3. I did consider placing the words in the shape of a significant object, as it would carry some more meaning. But then I didn't simply for aesthetic purposes.

Also, the small words. Pretty much both of the alleged intentions are true. Also, they cannot be any bigger, since the sizes are a direct ratio to the amount of times the words are said. Unless I used a logarithmic scale. Maybe that's what I should've done.

  4. If the sizes follow a ratio to the amount of times the words are said, then wouldn't increasing the size (while maintaining this ratio) not affect the graph at all?

As there is no scale (unlike 'around the world' where a rough scale is given) One's basis for any link to a numerical value is given purely by the size of the largest and smallest of words in the graph.

So, (I'm assuming this graph was intended for a Lord the rings fan base) lets say that the smallest word was said 5 times, and the largest being 500, it would not matter what size these are on the graph, as the viewer would see the word "Frodo" as the largest, relate it approximately to the amount of times they can recall it being said throughout the movie, and this is how a baseline value would be established (the smallest and largest word's approximate frequency recounted and a range established in between these values)

  5. So, it can't be bigger simply because of the size of the webpage. That is the real reason. Unless I changed the shape, which I refuse to do.

Also, the actual number of times each word is said —by nature of the graph style— is not meant to be interpreted. The image simply informs of relativity only. The word "Frodo" is about 5 times the size of the word Gollum, suggesting only that the word Frodo is said 5 times more often than Gollum. I chose to leave any interpretation of the actual number up to the viewers imagination.
